(I’ve been singing this song all week)
Fast Tube by Casper
It’s my last week at work. It’s a happy thing – we’re all really tired of this job – But for me anyway, it’s a little melancholy. I’ve stayed longer than most of the kitchen staff, long enough to see our numbers drop from 400 to 75; long enough to see our little trailer city starting to be torn down. Working up here has kinda become a “normal” for me, and it’s going to be weird getting back into normal life.
I went for a walk with a couple of my co-workers yesterday to find a the river, (one of them anyway) and I took some pictures of the camp and the surrounding landscape.
- And so, the three intrepid adventurers set out on their grand adventure…
- It’s easy to feel like a three-year-old walking through a construction site like this one. “Twuck!”
- Twuck! Twuck!
- Oh yeah, we are totally by the book people.
- “Sign? What sign?”
- At first we thought we’d go through the quarry…
- Francie says: “Look, a deer print!”
- The deer print…
- There were some birds here, but they flew away. So I got a very nicely composed picture of a rock.
- Hah! Tri-Tiered-Tires…
- We didn’t think we could actually make it through the quarry, so we decided to go through the woods.
- I have no idea what “Toba Channel” is…
- This photo looks like I should apply a vintage effect, and write something in Helvetica on it.*
- There were some nifty shadows going on.
- “That’s not a trail!” “Sure it is, let’s go!”
- Curtis leads the way along the “trail”
- This very kindly tree was named ‘Earl’. He let me take his picture.
- By this point, Curtis is still insisting we’re on a trail…
- Curtis and Francie. On the “Trail”
- And this is why we’re here. Power poles are a rare natural resource, and harvesting them effectively and sustainably requires literally hundreds of people
- After crossing the rotting log, our next chalange was the crumbly rock pile.
- … And the inexplicable sand dunes?
- There’s the lake. I think we’ll move on…
- Another crumbly rock pile! I sent a sizable boulder down this one. That was awesome…
- Then, into the forest…
- The DEEP DARK FOREST… Note Curt’s bear spray.
- We hit a dead end in the DEEP DARK FOREST, so we backtracked a bit.
- Lovely view of the quarry here…
- ….And the camp I suppose…
- Anyway, back into the DEEP DARK FOREST.
- Okay, so this is running water, but I wouldn’t exactly classify it as a river.
- Pretty though
- Moss
- Now THIS is a river.
- Francie…
- ….And Curtis, both enjoying the wine they made in the back from the leftover juice of berry pie filling. (I had a ginger ale)
- Nice as the river was, mauled by bears is a state we try not to enter too often.
- There was a grey heron at the lake, posing all nice for me.
- I thought he was going to fly away before I got closer.
- But he just wanted me to get a picture of his better side…
- Splish-Splash
- “Look at the little water bugs!”
- The lake almost looks pretty from down here
- Some Jawas are violating parking laws here.
- “WaaaAAAlllee”
- You can tell work has slowed down a bit…
- Back to NASA- I mean Toba Camp
